GM

We have campaigned for sustainable farming practices which don't include the use of genetically modified crops. As part of our campaign we lobbied the council not to allow GM crops to be grown on council land and not to allow GM crops to be used in school meals. These policies were adopted by the council which declared itself as a GM free area. Currently no GM crops are being grown commercially in the UK but trials for a blight resistant GM potato were planned for Hedon in East Yorkshire. A local campaign has preventing this from happening until 2008. There is an online petition against these plans. See the real food part of the Friends of the Earth website. There are also proposals to produce GM biofuel crops.

For more information about GM crops see the main FoE website or other sites listed in the links such as GM Freeze.
