Shop local first

Some years ago, long before food miles were on everyone's lips, a member of our group created a directory of local shops in the Ryedale area in order to inform people how they could avoid supporting the big supermarkets and contribute to the preservation of local infrastructure instead. The Council loved her work and sponsored the publication, which is now available at Tourist Informations and in shops.

Now we have been trying to do the same for the entire York area and have been sending out inquiries to not only shops, but also to other food venues such as cafes, restaurants, B&Bs, bakeries, butchers etc. We have asked them about the "localness" of their food, if they sell organic and Fair Trade stuff and if they use energy from renewable energy sources. Interested in the results?
